Header — right of utilities
Standard SaaS placement. Users find it instinctively. Sits next to gear (settings) so the cluster reads as 'meta controls'.
Header — left of help icon
Same row, slightly more prominent because it precedes the utility cluster. Operator identity comes before tools.
Footer — between Status Briefing and Brief mode
In-character placement next to the operator's primary actions. The footer is already labelled 'Operator ready' so identity + actions cluster.
Footer — bottom-right of briefing bar
Far end of the footer, mirroring the gear's bottom-of-sidebar position. Leaves the briefing controls undisturbed.
Sidebar — top, replacing 'Intelligence filter' title
First thing users see in the sidebar. Identity-first sidebar reads as 'this is your station.' Pushes existing controls down by ~32 px.
How to pick
- Variant 1 (header right) — most discoverable, lowest cognitive load. The standard answer.
- Variant 2 (header left) — discoverable but takes precedence over the help/settings cluster, slightly different rhythm.
- Variant 3 (footer between) — most in-character (operator identity + operator actions in one row) but less discoverable for first-time users.
- Variant 4 (footer right) — clean and out-of-the-way; mirrors the bottom-of-sidebar gear position.
- Variant 5 (sidebar top)— strongest “your station” feel; prominent enough to be both discoverable and identity-affirming.
